HISTORY

On the petition of Peter Turner, the famed surgeon of the Revolutionary War, and others a Dispensation was granted by the Grand Lodge on June 24, 1806. Stephen Franklin became the first Master under that Dispensation with Dr. Turner as Senior Warden. It was extended annually until a permanent charter was granted in 1810. A special communication of the Grand Lodge was held on October 4, 1810, for the constituting of the Lodge. It flourished until the anti-Masonic period when the charter, along with those of several other lodges, was surrendered. No meetings were held from 1827 to 1852 at which time the Charter was restored. King Solomon’s Lodge has grown and prospered since that time.

From the earliest meetings in a schoolroom of the East Greenwich Academy, the Lodge has enjoyed a variety of quarters. These have been as varied as a room above a tavern to the Kent County Court House on several occasions. The beautiful yet simple structure which now houses the Lodge was dedicated on April 30, 1967. It represents the fruition of much dedicated effort on the part of many current members.

The Lodge has a history of long tenure for the holders of the key officers of Secretary and Treasurer. It has been honored by the selection of one of its own to serve as Grand Master, Most Worshipful Ernest L. Lockwood.

King Solomon’s Lodge No. 11 is an active and prosperous Lodge. Throughout recent history, because of the proximity to military installations, the Lodge has sent forth many of the Craft to all corners of the globe.
