BIOGRAPHY

Stephen E. Mitchell, of Friendship Lodge No. 7, F. & A. M. of Chepachet, Rhode Island on May 17, 1993 was elected and installed the One Hundred Thirty-Eighth Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the Two Hundred and Second Annual Communication held at Freemasons’ Hall, East Providence, Rhode Island.

Most Worshipful Brother Mitchell was born on Indian Island, Old Town, Maine on January 17, 1946, the son of Theodore N. and Eleanor (Dana) Mitchell. He was educated in the Old Town Public Schools, graduating from Old Town High School in 1964. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Husson College in 1969, his Master of Education Degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1975, his Certificate of Advance Graduate Study from the University of Connecticut in 1983 and is a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. While at the University of Connecticut, Brother Mitchell was elected to Phi Delta Kappa, a National Honor Fraternity and Phi Lambda Theta - Beta Sigma Chapter - a National Honor and Professional Association in Education.

In 1969, Brother Mitchell began his professional career in education by joining the faculty of York High School in York, Maine as a teacher and department chair of Business Education. After completing his Masters degree, he moved to Rhode Island in 1977 to accept a position as Assistant Principal at Ponaganset High School in Gloucester, which he served for thirteen years. In 1990, he was appointed Principal of Burrillville High School in Harrisville. Brother Mitchell has served on numerous professional boards of the State and National Secondary School Principals’ Association. He has served as Assistant Chairman and Chairman on numerous Accreditation Teams in Connecticut and Massachusetts on behalf of the Commission of the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. He is a member to numerous professional organizations in the field of Education.

On July 12, 1986, he married the former Deborah Reynolds of Chepachet, Rhode Island. He has one stepdaughter, Jill.

Most Worshipful Brother Mitchell’s Masonic record began on January 31, 1973, when he was initiated an Entered Apprentice, passed to the degree of Fellow Craft on February 28, 1973, and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on March 28, 1973 in Ocean Lodge, No. 142, A. F. & A. M. Wells, Maine. He affiliated with Friendship Lodge No. 7, F.& A. M. on November 11, 1978 and was elected Worshipful Master on September 7, 1985.

He was appointed a District Deputy Grand Master to the Fifth District by Most Worshipful Edward V. Hudson in 1986 and served in the Fifth, Fourth, Third and First Districts. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1990, Senior Grand Warden in 1991, and Deputy Grand Master in 1992. He was appointed Grand Representative to the National Grand Lodge of Denmark in 1988. He is past member of the Board of Managers and has also served as Chairman. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Masonic Youth Foundation and currently serves on the scholarship committee of the Scottish Rite. He also holds membership in the Philalethes Society.

Most Worshipful Brother Mitchell holds membership in the four bodies of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Providence, and is the Senior Warden of The Princes of Jerusalem. He holds membership in Scituate Chapter No. 8, R. A. M.; Providence Council No. 1, RSM; St. John’s Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar; a noble of Palestine Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; and is a member of the Sword of Bunker Hill, Gaspee Order 99.

Most Worshipful Brother Mitchell is active in his community where he has served as Assistant Chairman of the West Glocester Elementary School Building Committee, is the Assistant Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the West Glocester Fire District, and currently serves as the Town Moderator for the Town of Glocester.
