BIOGRAPHY

From Biographies of Past Grand Masters, 1821-1901, by the Grand Lodge of Missouri:

Most Worshipful Brother L. S. Cornwell appeared for the first time in the Grand Lodge at the "adjourned session" in Lexington, Missouri, July 10, 1848. The second instance wherein mention in the Grand Lodge annals is made was his election as Deputy Grand Master in 1853. When the Grand Lodge opened in 1854, in the absence of his predecessor, M. W. Brown, G. M., Brother Cornwell presided. At this session Brother Cornwell was elected Grand Master, and re-elected in 1855. He was succeeded by Brother Benjamin Sharp.

Brother Cornwell was born in Todd County, Kentucky, December 8, 1811. He married in Nashville, Tennessee, June 18, 1836, and soon after moved to Lexington, Missouri, and thence to Columbus, Missouri, where he organized the Lodge of which he was Master for several years.

He represented Johnson County in the State legislature in 1856 and 1857. His removal followed in 1858 to Olathe, Kansas, from which he was sent to the Legislature in 1859. At Olathe he organized the Masonic Lodge and served as Master one year. In 1861 and 1862 he was a resident of Westport, Missouri. In 1863 he became a resident of St. Louis and engaged in the hotel business at 12th and Olive streets, which he continued until December, 1865, when he moved to Natchez, Mississippi. He was Master of Andrew Jackson Lodge while residing there.

In 1869 he moved to Waterproof, Louisiana. Some years later he went to Vidalia. He died in Natchez, Mississippi, September 10, 1888, where his remains rest.
