MEMORIALS

ELIJAH BELCHER 1776-1857

From Moore's Freemason's Monthly, Vol. XVI, No. 6, March 1857, Page 191:

Whereas it has pleased an all wise Providence to remove by death from among us our much esteemed and worthy Brother Elijah Belcher, aged 81 years. Brother Belcher faithfully sustained his relation to Masonry for more than half a century, being the first one proposed and initiated in Rising Star Lodge, fifty-seven years ago. For many years he was a constant attendant on the regular meetings of the Lodge, but of late by reason of bodily infirmities has not attended. As a Mason he was always uniform and consistent, firm and unyielding, whom no sophistry could beguile or artifice deceive. He was a kind and obliging neighbor, a social friend, and esteemed by all who knew him as an upright and honest man.

In life he was admonished by the Plumb and acted on the Square, but the Grand Leveler, Time, has called him to mingle with his kindred dust: — Be it therefore

  • Resolved, That in the demise of our worthy Brother the community has lost an exemplary citizen, society a social friend, and Masonry one of its most endeared members.
  • Resolved, That although our venerable Brother has passed away on the level of time to that Temple not made with hands, where, when faith is lost in sight and hope ends in fruition, we shall meet him again to part no more forever.
  • Resolved, That these resolutions be entered on the journal of the Lodge as a token of the esteem entertained of our deceased Brother.
  • Resolved, That we extend our condolence to the family of our deceased Brother in their bereavement, and that a copy of these resolves be sent to them, and a copy to the Editor of the Masonic Magazine at Boston, for insertion, signed by the Secretary.

Stoughton, March 6, 1857.

SIMEON T. DRAKE 1799-1863

From Moore's Freemason's Monthly, Vol. XXII, No. 7, May 1863, Page 222:

Stoughton, April 3, 1863.

Resolutions adopted by Rising Star Lodge, Stoughton, Mass. April 2, 1863:

  • Whereas, it hath pleased Divine Providence sorely to bereave Rising Star Lodge, in the death of one of its most esteemed and dearly beloved members, Brother Simeon T. Drake, therefore
  • Resolved, That while we recognize all that God doeth among us, as ever wise and good, and bow with profound submission to bis holy providence, we realize most deeply, in the death of Br. Drake, the loss of a long tried, most faithful friend and companion; one who has long been a chief pillar of Masonry in this community; who embracing it in its early and unpopular days, stood firmly by it in times of adversity, and continued, even unto the hour when death took him from oar midst, to give to the institution he so much loved, his labor and his means, and above all, the support of a most upright and worthy character.
  • Resolved, That we shall cherish in sacred recollection the virtues of our departed Brother, long keeping in mind the obligations we all owe him, in the distinguished services he has rendered us, as he has led us, step by step in the knowledge of the mystic rites of our Order, and instructed us in its great principles; and as henceforth we look upon the seat he has so long and honorably filled, sad indeed will be our hearts, for that we shall see his face and hear his voice no more.
  • Resolved, That we most deeply sympathize with the widow of our departed Brother, in her very great affliction, which leaves her the last surviving member of the beloved household, assuring her, that in her loneliness, our remembrance of her shall not fail; praying that she will find rest in the Divine Comforter, and be supported by His sanctifying grace in this and all her trials.

James Swan,
J. W. Dennis,
Enos Talbot,
Committee.

JOEL TALBOT 1790-1859

Stoughton, Nov. 23d, 1859.

Br. Moore — At a meeting of Rising Star Lodge of Freemasons, holden at Masons' Hall in Stoughton, Nov. 10th, Rev. Br. James W. Dennis, Ansel Capen and James Swan were appointed a committee to prepare some resolutions, expressive of the feelings of the Lodge, regarding the death of our worthy Brother Joel Talbot, Esq. Subsequently the following preamble and resolves were submitted as their report :—

  • Whereas, it has pleased our Heavenly Father in his inscrutable wisdom to remove by death our Most Excellent and beloved Brother Joel Talbot, and raise him to a higher and better sphere of being in the Heavenly World, therefore
  • Resolved, That in the death of Brother Talbot we experience an irreparable loss, — the loss of a good man, a true Brother, a faithful Companion; one excellent in counsel, diligent in labor, pure in life, steadfast in friendship, unceasing in his devotion and attendance to Masonry, and whose character was in truth an honor and an ornament to our Lodge and to the Order.
  • Resolved, That, while the sight of his now vacant place in our midst touches our hearts, and involves us in deep sorrow, we are comforted by the belief that the Divine Providence doeth all things wisely and well, and in this assurance would seek submission to the holy will and pleasure of Him, who is the Grand Master of us all.
  • Resolved, That we remember with deep feeling the sorrowing family and friends of our deceased Brother, and extend to them the assurance of our tender regard and sincere sympathy in this season of their sore bereavement and trial.
  • Resolved, That the Secretary of the Lodge prepare and furnish the resolutions for publication in the Masonic Magazine, send a copy of the same to the widow and family of our deceased Brother, and enter the same upon the journal of the Lodge.

James W. Dennis,
Ansel Capen,
James Swan,
Committee.

Attest, Ansel Capen, Secretary of Rising Star Lodge.

SIMEON TUCKER 1766-1843

From Moore's Freemason's Monthly, Vol. II, No. 11, September 1843, Page. 370:

Died, in Canton, Mass., on the 13th of July last, Br. Simeon Tucker, a member of Rising Star Lodge, aged 77.

It is not our intention, at this time, to present an extended obituary notice of Br. Tucker. During a long life he sustained an irreproachable character; and " as he lived respected, so he died regretted." But our object is briefly to speak of his constancy and fidelity to the Institution when assailed by the anti-masonic faction a few years since, in that section of the country. If we honor the patriots of the Revolution, who fought and conquered the enemies of their country in times which "tried men's souls," in like manner ought we to cherish the memories of those veterans of our Order who, faithful to their principles and obligations, defended it against the ruthless assaults of its adversaries. Of this number was our deceased Brother. His residence was in the county of Norfolk, where the first anti-masonic assembly, ever convened in this Commonwealth, was held. The faction speedily assumed a political form. Anti-masonry was carried into the elections. All officers elected in the county of Norfolk were anti-masonic. In several towns, Freemasons were excluded from the jury boxes. In others, threats and intimidations were resorted to, with the view to induce them to renounce the Order. Under such circumstances of peril and difficulty, the subject of this notice, though often assailed, stood firm and inflexible. He lived to see the faction which persecuted him, utterly prostrated, and its leaders covered with infamy and shame. In justice to the other members of Rising Star Lodge, it should be stated, that they all supported their integrity and honor. No traitor was found in their ranks. Opposition from without had no other effect than to cement more closely their union. None "bowed the knee to Baal."

The funeral of Br. Tucker took place at the Unitarian church in Canton, where appropriate religious services were performed by R. W. and Rev. Br. Benjamin Huntoon.

JOHN H. WALES 1798-1843

From Moore's Freemason's Monthly, Vol. II, No. 11, September 1843, Page 370:

Died, in Stoughton, on the 25th of July last, Br. John H. Wales, Master of Rising Star Lodge, aged 45. He was a worthy member of our Fraternity and ardently attached to its principles. He discharged the duties of a presiding Master in a manner highly creditable to himself and acceptable to the Lodge. By his punctual attendance at all the communications of the Grand Lodge, he performed a duty too often neglected by others, and has left an example of promptitude worthy of imitation. The last time we saw him, he was at the head of his Lodge in the procession to Bunker Hill, on the 17th of June last On that auspicious day, in the vigor of health, he was with us to exchange congratulations on the bright and cheering prospects every where presented of the returning prosperity of our benevolent Institution. But, "man cometli forth like a flower and is cut down"— and thus, suddenly, in the prime of manhood, was our Brother taken from us. Let us cherish his memory and imitate his virtues. Let us sympathize with his afflicted widow and orphan children in their irreparable loss; and may they and we be consoled in the confident trust that his " immortal spirit has returned to God who gave it."

Our departed Brother, was a member of several other Associations, who attended his funeral, as the last solemn tribute of respect to his memory. The funeral obsequies were performed at the Universalist church in Stoughton, where an appropriate discourse was delivered by the Pastor, Rev. M. B. Ballou.
