REGULAR SESSIONS

ANNUAL SESSION, 09/09/1817

Meeting held at Mason's Hall, Newburyport (ChI-148):

The Grand Chapter opened.

Grand Chapter voted as follows:

  • To permit the Committee on Regalia to sit further.
  • To grant a "certificate of approbation" to Luke Eastman's collection of songs. Note: this book is Masonick Melodies, and the book is in the SCL Library catalog.
  • To accept the report on by committee on fees reported as shown below.
  • To accept the report by the committee on meeting places, which reported that it had arranged for the Grand Chapter to meet in the Exchange Coffee House in Boston.
  • To grant dispensation for payment of current dues by Adoniram Chapter. The Committee noted that the report was from "a consideration of particular circumstances, and recommend that this shall not be considered as a precedent in any future applications."
  • To grant a charter for Morning Star Chapter in Springfield.
  • To review the accounts of Treasurer and Secretary and fix their compensation.
  • To approve the following:
    • "That the Grand Secretary be directed to forward to each of the Chapters under the jurisdiction, an annual printed Communication (under the direction of the Grand High Priest, and within one month after each annual meeting of the Grand Chapter) of the names of the Grand Officers, and such other matters as the Grand High Priest may deem necessary."

The Committee on fees to the Grand Chapter recommended the following:

That every Chapter under the jurisdiction of this Grand Chapter shall, in future, require of every candidate by them accepted and advanced to the degree of Mark Master Mason, the full fee for exaltation, and every Chapter shall make return of those advanced, and pay the fee to the Grand Chapter, although such candidate may not have been exalted. Provided, nevertheless, that this rule shall not be considered to cases where the Royal Arch degree shall have been previously conferred.

The committee to locate a place for future meetings of the Grand Chapter was given leave to sit again.

The meeting elected and appointed the following officers for the Grand Royal Arch Chapter for the ensuing year:

STATED MEETING, 12/09/1817

Held at Mason's Hall, Boston (ChI-153):

The Grand Chapter opened.

The Grand Chapter voted:

  • To allow the regalia committee to continue to sit.
  • To appoint a committee of Companions Fowle, Abbot and Loring to "consider what measures may be adopted to prevent itinerant persons attempting to instruct the Chapters or individual Companions under this jurisdiction, in the lectures appertaining to the degrees of Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and Royal Arch, and to preserve the lectures in their present order."
  • To grant the petition for a dispensation for a Chapter at Springfield to be constituted, despite not receiving the approbation of King Hiram Chapter.
  • To commit the set of regulations previously approved regarding fees to a committee of Companions Abbot, Knapp and Jenkins; they recommended that this regulation be repealed.
  • To appoint a committee of Companions Whitman, Purkitt and Jenkins to report on the subject of censures and expulsions.

STATED MEETING, 06/09/1818

Held at Mason's Hall, Boston (ChI-156):

The Grand Chapter opened.

The Grand Chapter voted:

  • To permit the committee on censures and expulsions to sit further.
  • To appoint a committee of Companions Purkitt, Jenkins and Loring to revise the present form of Charters and procure a number of blanks.
  • To grant a dispensation to a Chapter in Nantucket.
  • To provide a dinner for the next annual session.

It was reported that Companion Henry Whipple had received the Order of High Priesthood.

SPECIAL MEETINGS

SPECIAL MEETING AT SPRINGFIELD, 06/29/1818

Held in Springfield (ChI-158):

The Grand Chapter opened, and received the report on Morning Star Chapter, U. D., of Springfield, which found the records in order and the members duly proficient.

A procession was then formed to the hall, where the "ceremonies of dedication were performed."

The Chapter was then closed in due form, and the Companions "partook of a bountiful entertainment provided for the occasion."
