Grand Master, 1860-1861

BIOGRAPHY

From Biographies of Past Grand Masters, 1821-1901, by the Grand Lodge of Missouri:

Most Worshipful Brother Marcus H. McFarland first appeared in the Grand Lodge as a Visitor and member of Clarksville Lodge No. 17, in 1845. At the Annual Communication May, 1848, when Master of Ashley Lodge No. 75, he was appointed on the Credential, also Grievance Committee, serving several years. In 1849 he was D. D. Grand Master of the Third District, and recorded as residing at Louisville, Missouri. At the Annual Communication of 1850 he was Senior Grand Deacon pro tem. The District was changed to the 4th in 1852, and again in 1854 to the 10th; he was continued as District Deputy.

In 1859 he was elected Deputy Grand Master. At the Annual Session in 1860, M. W. Brother Marcus Boyd being absent, Brother McFarland presided as Grand Master, and was elected to that important station. He presided at the Annual Communication in 1861. His last appearance in the Grand Lodge was in 1883. He was succeeded by M. W. Brother William R. Penick.

No records remain giving anything regarding the personal history of Brother McFarland; only that he was formerly a resident of Pike, afterwards residing in Lincoln County, where he was a leading physician and active in Masonic circles. His health failing in later years, he re moved to Texas, where he died October 4, 1890. His remains were brought to Missouri for interment.
