DESCRIPTION

This game appeared on Kickstarter in 2016. It came from the publisher (but not the designer) of the co-op game Flash Point: Fire Rescue, which was also the source of endless expansions, most of which we didn't buy.

Riley is a former competitive MTG guy, and thus had a pretty good idea of how to build a game that relied on player decks; the concept combined co-operative play with the deckbuilding mechanism introduced by Dominion and seized upon by many other games. The result is an intensely fun, very tense, highly replayable co-op that will warm the hearts of the fiercest competitors (you know, the types that don't like co-op games).

We have this playmat, by the way, and it's been well worth having.

Aeon's End is hard, especially against some Nemesis opponents. There is considerable luck involved, but one aspect is removed: there is no shuffling of player decks. When your deck runs out, flip over the discard and play it in the order in which cards come up. That means you have an idea of when things will appear. When you discard, there are specific rules: cast spells, purchased cards, followed by cards used in the hand in whatever order you like.

The biggest challenge is matching the market - the cards you can buy - with the mages - the different characters you can play - with the expected opponent. And the opponent isn't always the same; every Nemesis monster has 9-12 cards specific to it, with some "basic" or "upgraded basic" cards added. It means that there's a lot of replayability, even with the same mages and the same Nemesis; it also means that if we lose, we can re-arrange the market to add something we needed, or swap out a mage to give us an ability we lacked.

Over time there has been a tremendous amount of additional content added, and it now occupies one full size box, two tall square boxes, and a playmat. There are several online randomizers, and the game provides randomizer cards.

EXPANSIONS

Since our content is merged and sorted, it's hard to distinguish what came from where, and what mechanisms arrived with which expansion. There is a lot of content.
