BAY STATE ARMY LODGE #1
In 1861, six dispensations were granted for lodges to be held with active-duty regiments during the American Civil War. Each dispensation was granted to a particular regiment. These dispensations expired at the end of 1865.

A Dispensation was granted on the 7th ultimo, for a Lodge in the Third Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, stationed at Fort Monroe, Virginia. The officers named in the Dispensation are W. Brother Timothy Ingraham, Master; Brother A. S. Cushman, S. W.; Brother Wm. A. Sewell, J. W. ; all of New Bedford.
